Reissues have been released by both Hasbro in 2008 for the line’s 25th Anniversary and The Bridge Direct/Basic Fun! under license beginning in 2017 for the 35th anniversary. These ponies are most often called "retro" or "repro" ponies, as they are G1 ponies not released during the G1 period of 1982-1995. Basic Fun! has given its pony line the official name My Little Pony Classic.

Hasbro used molds made from original G1 ponies sourced from its employees to create the 2008 25th Anniversary ponies, while The Bridge Direct/Basic Fun! has purchased ponies on eBay and is thought to use computer-based 3D scanning/modeling to create its pony molds.

Rainbow Ponies Backcard

Hasbro released the first G1 repro ponies for the line’s 25th Anniversary beginning in 2007. They were packaged in sets of three, and only two G1 pony sets were reproduced. The Collector Ponies sets had a special online midnight release of the first 100 sets, designated with a special seal. The Rainbow Ponies proved harder to find, seemingly more limited in release.

These ponies’ molds were made using original G1 ponies sourced from Hasbro employees, as Hasbro has long maintained that it lost the original G1 molds. This method resulted in slight differences between original G1 ponies and these reproductions, including smaller eyes and overall size. Their material is harder than standard G1 ponies, and their hair is brighter but lesser quality.

Toy Fair NY 2008 Press Kit

This press kit is a limited release that was distributed to sales representatives at the 2008 NY Toy Fair. The package is a two-tier birthday cake design, in which the top “cake layer” pulls up from the bottom layer using a paperboard tab styled as a 25th birthday candle to reveal a Core 7 Pinkie Pie and a repro Cotton Candy. It also includes a CD. The silver 25th anniversary pin was also distributed at the event.

2017-2018: 35th Anniversary

35th Anniversary Seal

In 2017, a Florida-based toy company called The Bridge Direct (now Basic Fun!) received a license from Hasbro to produce G1 repro ponies. Its original reported plan was to reproduce all standard North American G1 ponies. However, the company filed for bankruptcy in June, 2024. This, in addition to seemingly lackluster sales and potential imposed tariffs, leaves the line’s future uncertain.

These ponies have concave feet with notably present 2017 or later production year stamp, as well as The Bridge Direct or Basic Fun! manufacturer stamp. Tail ribbons are sewn into the bases of their tails, already tied into bows, rather than included separately in the package for the owner to tie into the ponies’ hair.

The first reissue set is the Collector Ponies, which retailed for approximately $9.99 US each. Each pony includes a standard comb, ribbon, and poster.

There are two box styles – one with a window on the left edge and one without. Ponies were also packaged in Collector Sets of three – Butterscotch, Cotton Candy, and Bluebelle & Snuzzle, Minty, and Blossom. Each three-pack includes a repro original comb for each pony.

Collector Sets

Collector Set Backcard

Each set of three ponies includes a ribbon and standard comb for each pony. The ponies are the same as their individual releases.

35th Anniversary Rainbow Collection: Series 1

Scented Rainbow Ponies Backcard

The next set released is the Year 2 Rainbow Ponies in 2018, also retail-priced at $9.99 USD each. Each pony includes a standard comb, ribbon, rainbow shooting star brush, and round sticker.

There are two variations of each pony – scented and unscented – as well as a few packaging variations. The scented ponies are known to discolor very quickly where the fragrance patches are on their bodies. As a result, unscented variants were released in 2019. All six ponies in the set were sold individually in both variations.

PLEASE NOTE: The following photos of loose ponies are the first official stock photos of this set from Basic Fun!. The ponies pictured are not reproduction ponies, however. They are original G1 ponies. As such, these photos are misleading and should not be used for repro identification purposes.

Rainbow Pony Gift Set

A Rainbow Pony Gift Set was also sold and contains five of the six scented Rainbow Ponies, excluding Sunlight, as well as one rainbow shooting star brush and a round sticker that features retro art of the full set of six Rainbow Ponies. This set was also sold with scented and unscented versions of the ponies, which are otherwise the same as their individually sold counterparts.

Cotton On Kids Scented Rainbow Collection

In Australia and New Zealand, Cotton On Kids sold four of the six scented Rainbow Ponies packaged in a midnight blue box. The ponies are otherwise the same as the above releases.

Pretty Parlor

Twinkles Comparison Photo – Original G1 and Repro

The Pretty Parlor is the only playset produced thus far. It retailed for $19.99 USD. The parlor includes Peachy with ribbon, and Twinkles. Twinkles is not in her original G1 Pretty Parlor mold, but in the Strawberry Shortcake Custard the Cat mold.

The repro playset includes, in addition to Peachy and Twinkles, Peachy nametag, purple bridle, reins, basket strap, and saddle, pink heart brush and original comb, white basket, yellow straw hat, and white floral bonnet. It does not include the pink felt blanket, green and yellow ribbons, or seven other pony nametags that the original Pretty Parlor includes.

35th Anniversary Unicorn & Pegasus Collection: Series 1

Year 2 Unicorn & Pegasus Backcard

The Year 2 Unicorn & Pegasus Ponies began hitting retailer shelves in 2018. Each pony includes a ribbon, shooting star brush, round sticker, and poster and was retail priced at $9.99 USD.

The unicorns are notably different from their G1 counterparts because their mane stripes are rooted into the second mane row rather than a third separate row. Moondancer's stripe is barely noticeable, as it is blended into her mane, and some of the lavender hair is also blended into her tail.

Bow Tie Color Variants – Light and Dark Blue

Basic Fun!’s next releases were the Year 2 Earth Ponies. Each pony includes a ribbon, flower brush, and poster and retailed for $9.99 USD. Bow Tie has two variations – light blue and dark blue.

Although concave-foot Blossom and Cotton Candy were included in the original G1 assortment, they were not repackaged for sale with this assortment.

Rainbow Collection: Series 2

Rainbow Ponies Series 2 Backcard

Also in 2019, the Year 3 Rainbow Ponies were released. Each pony retailed for approximately $9.99 USD and includes a standard comb, ribbon, and round sticker.

Stranger Things x My Little Pony

Stranger Things Applejack Backcard

In the summer of 2019, Basic Fun! collaborated with Netflix’s popular 1980s-period horror series Stranger Things to create a new G1 pony – Upside-Down Applejack that coordinated with the show’s season three debut. Her monochromatic blue color scheme and upside down symbol fit with the show’s Upside Down realm.

(SIDENOTE: The show’s props department borrowed a pony backpack and bracelet watch from a collector for show use with recurring character Erica Sinclair, who loves My Little Pony.)

Applejack is packaged upside down and was initially exclusive to US Target stores at the retail price $9.99 USD. She includes a flower brush and ribbon.

San Diego Comic Con Majesty

Also released in 2019 was a new special edition Majesty available exclusively at Basic Fun!’s San Diego Comic Con booth. She features a pearly finish, Twice As Fancy-style symbols, unpainted eyes, and a glittery horn. Majesty’s hair is super-long and two-toned blue with iridescent tinsel, and she sports a shimmery blue neck ribbon and sewn-in tail bow. The back of her package is rounded, and the backcard inside looks like a Dream Castle tower with a retro art-style Majesty looking out the window.

This special edition Majesty was a limited run of 1,000 pieces. She was priced at $19.99 and sold out at the event.

Later in 2020, she appeared for sale unboxed on Taobao and Aliexpress. It is unknown how many ponies were available for sale on those platforms.

2020

My Little Pony Third Generation

G3 Package Seal
G3 Backcard

Basic Fun! Kicked off its 2020 releases with reproductions of Applejack, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, and Rainbow Dash. Interestingly, these characters are all part of G4’s Mane Six. Each pony’s package features a ”G3” emblem in the top left corner, which is common terminology throughout the collecting community, and each pony includes a bow brush. These reissued ponies are brighter than their original G3 counterparts and can turn their heads, a feature that did not occur in G3 until 2006.

Unicorn & Pegasus Collection: Series 2

Unicorn & Pegasus Collection Series 2 Backcard
Heart Throb Variants – Light and Dark Pink
Sparkler Variants – Red Tail and Lavender Tail

2020 also brought the release of four of the eight new Year 3 unicorns and pegasus ponies, retailing for $9.99 USD. Each pony includes a crescent moon comb, ribbon, and round sticker.

Missing from the set are the curly-haired versions of Firefly and Medley, as well as Powder and Skyflier. (Year 3 Glory and Moondancer are identical to their Year 2 releases and were also not included in this assortment.) Notably, Powder and Skyflier would require a new mold to be created, while the mold for Gusty and Sparkler already existed from the Series 2 Rainbow Ponies.

Gusty and lavender-tailed Sparkler are notably different from their G1 counterparts because their mane stripes are rooted into the first mane row rather than a third separate row. Their manes are also styled to lay on their non-display sides. Red and lavender-tailed Sparkler does not have a mane stripe at all; rather, her mane is rooted so that the top half is lavender and the bottom half is red.

Heart Throb and Sparkler each have two variations. Heart Throb has a light pink-bodied and a dark pink-bodied variant, and Sparkler has a lavender tail variant and a red and lavender blended tail variant.

Earth Ponies: Series 2

The Year 3 Earth Ponies were the final release in 2020. Absent from the set are the curly-haired versions of Applejack and Bow-Tie. Each pony includes a butterfly brush, ribbon, and poster and retailed for $9.99 USD.

2021

Twinkle-Eyed Collection

Twinkled-Eyed Collection Backcard
Gingerbread Variants – Large and Small Symbols

August 2021 brought the year’s only release of four of the nine Year 4 Twinkle-Eyed Ponies. Each retails for $9.99 USD and includes a shooting star comb, ribbon, and round sticker.

There are two variants of Gingerbread – large symbols and small symbols. Fizzy is weighted in her back feet to prevent her from tipping forward, as ponies in this pose often do.

Despite Galaxy being in the same pose as Fizzy, she was left out of this set. Including Sky Rocket instead is an interesting choice because Galaxy is arguably more popular among both collectors and casual fans due to her consistent appearance in the G1 TV series.

Also absent from the set are popular TV series characters Masquerade and Whizzer, though this is likely because two additional pony molds would be required. Sweet Pop – in the same pose as Masquerade – and Speedy were also not produced.

2022-2023: 40th Anniversary

40th Anniversary Seal

2022-2023 was My Little Pony’s 40th anniversary, and Basic Fun! teased some big things to commemorate the occasion.

The Collector Ponies were repackaged in new Show Stable-style boxes and rereleased in 2022. Each pony includes a ribbon and a 40th Anniversary shooting star brush and retails for $14.99 USD. These ponies are no different than their 2017 counterparts, though an early prototype design image depicted them with new symbols that incorporated the "40 Years" emblem.

In 2023, Basic Fun! also released a 40th Anniversary Collector Three-Pack that contains pearly versions of Blossom and Cotton Candy, as well as a pearly mini Glory. Each pony includes a ribbon, and the set includes one white 40th Anniversary shooting star brush. The set was sold at Target in the US and retailed for $19.99 USD.

Celestial Ponies

After a successful 2018 letter campaign to Basic Fun! from members of a Facebook group, the Fancy Swirl Ponies were finally brought to life for the line’s 40th anniversary – nearly 30 years after the last G1 ponies were released in The Netherlands.

These ponies are based on concept art of the unproduced G1 set and are now known as the Celestial Ponies with names Aurora, Milky Way, Nova, and Polaris. These ponies are unique because they are new G1 ponies, but they were not produced in the G1 era.

Each pony includes a ribbon and 40th Anniversary shooting star brush and retails for $14.99 USD.

Nova and Polaris each have two variants. Nova was first released with white swirls and later with pink swirls. Polaris was first released with pale swirls and later with vibrant swirls.

Unreleased

Flutter Ponies

Three of the six Year 4 Flutter Ponies were presented at the 2019 NY Toy Fair as a boxed set, but they are not planned for production because no retailers chose to carry them. The ponies on display at the event were original Flutter Ponies, while the package included cardboard standees of the ponies.

Pretty Parlor with Lemon Drop

Also at 2019 Toy Fair, a recolored Pretty Parlor with Lemon Drop and Brandy was displayed. Brandy, like Twinkles, appears to have also been made using a Strawberry Shortcake mold of Pupcake rather than the original Brandy mold. This playset also was not picked up by any retailers. A limited amount of repro Lemon Drop ponies were made and sold from the factory on AliExpress and similar sites under the item title "The horse head in the classic childhood memory can rotate. Children's toy horses with more hair." The number produced and sold is unknown.

Totally Rad Collection

The Totally Rad Collection debuted at London and NY Toy Fairs in 2025. It features previously released ponies Firefly, Moonstone, Skydancer, and Starshine with brighter colors and ‘80s-style legwarmers and scrunchies. The latter three are in different poses. Whether retailers have chosen to carry them is currently unknown.

Stranger Things 5 x My Little Pony

Also shown at the 2025 London Toy Fair was a new Stranger Things collaborative pony, Rockin’ Robin. She is named after the DJ on the show’s radio station. Rockin’ Robin was shown at the event in the prancing earth pony pose, but she has been seen in a separate graphic as a pegasus in the Heart Throb pose. Release details are unknown at this time.
