The easiest way to tell the difference between the regular and "fat head" variation for set 1 is by looking at the feet.  For those in the Peach Blossom pose, the regular flutters have well-defined circles while the fh flutters have softer, more diffuse edges.  This is true for those in the Morning Glory pose too but there is also a difference in their stance.  The regular flutters have a wider stance while the fh flutters' feet are very close together.

1986 US Flutter Pony Pamphlet

The Flutter Ponies were introduced in Year Four. They are shorter and more slender than the typical adult pony and have iridescent, insect-like wings that “flutter” when the shell buttons on their backs are pressed and released. Their hair is a single color, and their manes are extra long. Each pony also bears a smaller, simplified version of her symbol on her cheek or forehead.

The Flutter Ponies’ wings are very fragile and prone to snapping off at the tabs, which are often left lodged inside the slots. Some collectors create and sell replacement/replica wings; collectors should always disclose when wings are not original in the event of resale.

Many Flutter Ponies have two head variants – the standard head and the “fat head.” Neither is more common than the other, and both bear "Made in China" and "© 86" stamps on their feet. It is thought that fat heads are the result of the molds wearing thin, allowing more room for the PVC to expand. This theory has not been proven, however.

The easiest way to differentiate between a standard pony and a fat head pony is to look at her feet. Standard head ponies have well-defined circular indents while the Fat Head ponies have softer, more diffuse edges. Standard head ponies also have a wider stance than fat heads. Lastly, ponies with standard heads will have thinner irises that are closer to touching at the top. Fat heads have thicker irises that appear more crescent-shaped and only extend about halfway up the pupil.

How to Tell If Your Pony Is a “Fat Head”

There are also variations in wing apparatuses. Earlier-produced ponies have enclosed tab slots. Later ponies have open slots that can allow for the wing tabs to be pushed up/out for easier removal.
